Step Into the World of Shadow Puppetry

Where Light, Story, and Craft Come Together Across Generations

Join our Shadow Puppetry workshop and explore one of Asia’s most enchanting forms of traditional storytelling. Learn how to craft and animate characters that dance between light and screen—bringing ancient tales to life.

What is Shadow Puppetry?

Shadow puppetry is a form of traditional theatre that uses flat, articulated puppets to cast moving silhouettes onto a screen, often accompanied by music and narration. Known for its vivid visuals and heartfelt storytelling, this art form has long served as both entertainment and cultural memory across China, Indonesia, Thailand, and beyond.

A Brief History of Shadow Puppetry

Shadow puppetry is believed to have originated in China over 2,000 years ago, during the Han Dynasty. Legend tells of an emperor grieving the death of his beloved concubine; to comfort him, court artists crafted a puppet in her likeness and used candlelight behind a screen to make her appear alive. This touching story became the foundation of shadow theatre—a medium built on illusion, imagination, and emotion.

As it spread through Asia, shadow puppetry took on many beautiful forms: in Indonesia, the intricate Wayang Kulit; in Thailand, the bold Nang Yai; and in India, the colourful Tholu Bommalata. Each tradition reflects its culture’s myths, spiritual beliefs, and artistic style.

In Chinese shadow puppetry, the puppets are usually made from translucent leather, meticulously hand-painted and jointed so they can move fluidly. Performers stand behind a lit screen, manipulating puppets to tell legendary tales—from hero stories to love dramas—often accompanied by traditional instruments and spoken dialogue.

What makes shadow puppetry so magical is its simplicity and depth. It transforms shadows into souls, paper into personalities, and light into living theatre. It continues to connect generations, passing down stories, values, and voices that might otherwise be lost.
